It’s “A Farewell to Arms” Friday night at 7:30 in the Library of Congress Packard Campus Theater on Mount Pony, as part of the ongoing tribute to “Women in Wartime, Before and After World War II.”
The 1932 Paramount classic based on the Ernest Hemingway novel is set during the Great War and stars Helen Hayes as a spirited battlefield nurse. Even amid the grime and blood, or perhaps because of it, a wounded soldier (Gary Cooper) falls for the brave broad. It won two Oscars for cinematography and sound and is said to be quite poetic.
35 mm, black and white, 1 hour and 20 minutes.
The Saturday matinee on Mount Pony is “The Bad and the Beautiful” (MGM, 1952) with Kirk Douglas and Lana Turner. Winner of five Oscars (best actress, cinematography, art direction, costume design and screenplay), the film is all about inside Hollywood and what some people will do to get to the top.
35 mm, black and white, 1 hour and 58 minutes
