Moviegoers have two chances to see Bogie on the big screen this weekend as the Library of Congress theater on Mount Pony continues its tribute to tough guys and dolls.
Tonight, it’s “Angels with Dirty Faces” (Warner Bros., 1938) starring Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney and Pat O’Brien. Cagney picked up an Oscar nomination for his lead role and Michael Curtiz got one for best director. It’s about two childhood friends from Hell’s Kitchen who meet again as adults from two different worlds. Black and white, 1 hour and 37 minutes.
There’s more trouble in shady places in Friday night’s “Lady of Burlesque” (United Artists, 1943), starring Barbara Stanwyck as dancer Dixie Daisy. Nominated for an Oscar for best music, the film involves a double murder at a burlesque theater, though it’s supposed to be a comedy. Black and white, 1 hour and 31 minutes.
Saturday night, Bogie’s back in “The Petrified Forest” (Warner Bros., 1936), a reference to dead trees in the desert, where the movie takes place. Bette Davis stars as a waitress in a small-town diner who dreams of getting out. Leslie Howard plays an aimless drifter who crosses her path and Bogie is the tough guy who can relate. “You know the story,” he says when asked about his life. And then he takes everyone hostage. Black and white, 1 hour and 22 minutes.
The weekend’s movies all screen for free at 7:30 p.m. Make reservations Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at (540) 827-1079 ext. 79994.
