Smokey eyes are for spring. Although we still have six more weeks of winter it’s never a bad idea to be ahead of the game on what’s to come.

Celebs from Fergie to Scarlett Johansson are wearing this makeup trend. Though the trend has been around for awhile it’s still seen everywhere.

Creating smokey eyes does not mean you have to use dark colors such as black or grey. Many girls also use violet, chocolate, coffee, dark pinks, greens, blues or purples.

When you pick your shadow color remember to keep your own eye color, skin tone and even hair color in mind, instead of the clothes you’re sporting.

When choosing your colors you must choose two coordinated shadow colors, a darker one to accentuate and a lighter one to support it. However you may choose to use single colors instead of the duo or even triple shadows. When doing so you may choose to use lilac, peach, champagne, taupe, nude or sand. These colors will give you a softer more sophisticated look.

Here are some tips on shadow colors to go with different eye colors:

nFor blue eyes, try black, grey, violet, purple, or very dark blue. These colors will accent your blue eyes since they will be much darker.

nFor hazel or green eyes, aside from the black and grey, also try dark green, deep khaki, brown, purple or plum.

nFor brown eyes, black and grey again of course along with copper, coffee and brown are your best choices.

The best types of shadows to use are powdered shadows as the creamy ones tend to not blend as well and also to smudge. as well. The greatest thing about this look is that it’s not meant to be neat and perfect, yet it is still glamorous and captivating.

The next step is choosing a soft eyeliner pencil of the same color as your feature shadow or one that will complement it. Powder eyeliner pencils are best as they are easier to blend and sometimes come with a sponge, which is also good for smudging and blending.

Once you have chosen your colors the next step of course is applying it.

For the smokey eyes look, you want to first apply a thin layer of foundation and powder just to the eyes, to make applying eye shadows last longer and go on smoother. This creates a clean canvas and prevents the eye shadow from creasing

Add the eyeliner to both top and bottom of the eyelids. Make sure to apply near the eyelash roots. The line should be thinner on the inside and gradually get thicker as it is applied to the outer corner of the eyes. Darker colors tend to make eyes appear smaller. To open the eyes up some start your eyeliner from the middle of the bottom eyelash line going to the outer corner.

Use your larger eye shadow brush to apply your supporting eye shadow from your eyelids to just below the eyebrows. Then take your smaller brush and apply the darker color on top of the eyeliner and up to the crease of the eyelid.

Keep as much of the darker colors’ intensity along the eyelash line and outer corners of the eyes. The eyeliner and eye shadow should be blended together seamlessly.

Next apply your mascara. It’s best to curl eyelashes before applying mascara to open up the eyes. To avoid clumping apply two or three coats.

At this time go back and add foundation. Adding foundation last will help prevent dark circles under the eyes.

Let’s not forget the lips. Keep the lip color neutral to draw more attention to the smokey eyes giving them the full impact. It’s best to use a lighter, flesh toned pencil and caramel or pink lipstick or lip gloss.

Finally add a rose or tawny blush color from the apples of the cheeks blending off to the edge of the hairline.
