KIDS SAFE: Protecting Your Children from Predators, a free community event sponsored by the Culpeper Task Force on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 27 at the Galbreath-Marshall Building on Old Fredericksburg Road.  Pizza and refreshments will be provided.  The agenda will include information provided by the Virginia State Police, the Commonwealth Attorney's office, the Department of Social "Services, Victim/Witness, and SAVVI Crisis Center.  If free child care for pre-school and school-aged children is needed call 825-8891 by April 24 to confirm your attendance.  If no childcare needed, no RSVP is needed. 

May 7
The AARP Culpeper Chapter No. 296 will have its monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. at the Culpeper Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.  The guest speaker will be Deputy Jerry Butler of the Madison County Sheriff's Department.  Butler will talk about the Madison County TRIAD Program, a state-wide crime-prevention organization for elderly citizens.  For further information, please call 547-3495.

May 19
Bus tour with Elsie Mobley to Lancaster, Pa. to see "In the Beginning" at the Millennium Theatre.  Bus will pick up passengers from Stanardsville at 6 a.m. and also at Culpeper at 6:45 a.m.   Lunch is included at the Willow Valley Resort.  Will arrive at the theatre at 3 p.m.  Depart for home at 6:15 p.m., arrive in Culpeper at 11 p.m. and then continue to Stanardsville for drop off at midnight.  Costs:  adults,  $149; youth (13-18), $125; children:  (3-12), $113.  For further information please call:  434-985-2227 or 547-3495. May 19
America World Adoption Association will be hosting a free adoption seminar titled "The Spirit of Adoption" from 10 a.m. to noon. The seminar will be held at the Open Door Baptist Church, 754 Germanna Hwy, Culpeper. For more information call AWAA, visit awaa.org or call 888-ONE-CHILD to register.

Afghans for Americans: Whether you knit or crochet, you are invited to meet with the "Culpeper Close Knits" at 10 a.m. on the last Thursday of every month at the Culpeper County Library. Our members assemble 6-inch x 9-inch knit or crocheted rectangles to create afghans which are then given to wounded veterans at Walter Reed Hospital.  For further information call 825-3980.

Culpeper Literacy Council will be giving free GED practice tests on the following Thursdays: April 26, May 17, and June 21 from 8:45 a.m.  to 1 p.m. at 415 S. Main St., Suite 204. Call the Culpeper Literacy Council at 825-5804 to sign up.

June 10
Culpeper Regional Hospital will be sponsoring Vine Arts. Our fifth annual art auction will run from 3 to  6 p.m. at the Depot. Art has been generously donated by local artists.  An array of wines will be served.  Tickets are $40 per person, $75 per couple.  The event helps in raising money for the pediatric areas of Culpeper Regional Hospital.  Dress will be casual.

The Knights of Columbus annual KOVAR drive is April 19, 20, 21 and May 5.  Members will be wearing bright yellow vests, distributing tootsie rolls and accepting donations at several area businesses.  All of the money collected will help people diagnosed as being mentally retarded.  You may also send checks made out to KOVAR and mailed to KOVAR, c/o Tom Cummings, 15777 Carrico Mills Road, Brandy Station, Va. 22714.

The Reunion Committee is making plans for the Class of 1957s 50th class reunion to be held this year. There are several classmates that the committee has been unable to locate. The Bereaved Parent: A special twice-monthly seminar and support group for people who are grieving the death of a child, will be held every first and third Saturday through June 16 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. It is a place to be around people who understand what it is like to have a child die. Topics are discussed and valuable information is shared to help with the grieving process, renewing hope for the future from a biblical perspective. The Minority Task Force and the Culpeper Quilt Guild has assembled an Underground Railroad quilt. The task force is selling raffle tickets - which are $2 each, 3 for $5 or 10 for $15 - for a chance to win the colorful quilt. The drawing is scheduled for the Juneteenth Celebration, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, on  June 16. Proceeds will help fund the Minority Task Force Scholarship Fund. Care Café is open  Thursdays 10 a.m. until noon. It's a place for those who are discouraged from illness, bereavement or caregiving or who have a family member or a loved one deployed in the military. CCHS Class of 1977: Some of your former classmates are hoping that we can get together this year to celebrate our 30-year class reunion. Your blood saves lives! Please check your calendar and plan to donate. Remember to drink lots of fluids — water or juice are best — the day before and the day of the blood drive. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and fatty foods. To give blood, you must be generally healthy, 17 years of age of more, and weight at least 110 pounds. For more information, call the Red Cross at 825-8611.

The Artists of Windmore are currently exhibiting original hand painted works of wall art. The locations of the exhibits are the Culpeper County Library and the Depot. The Artists of Windmore, daytime group, meets regularly at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday mornings. The location changes so please call Julia at 825-4210.

The Artists of Windmore, evening group, meet at 7 p.m. at the Depot on the second Monday of every month.
May 14: 7 p.m., Critique of last months photos and preparation for each artist to select an image they would like to include in a show.

A. G. Richardson Elementary School will be performing a production of  Disney's "101 Dalmations - Kids" beginning at 7 p.m. on  April 24 in the Culpeper County High School auditorium. Rather than charging a regular admission fee, the group will be accepting donations of dry dog and cat food or new towels or blankets for the Culpeper County Animal Shelter. Collection bins will be placed by the entry doors to the show.  Please come and support these talented young people and assist the animal shelter in collecting much needed supplies for our furry friends.  Questions may be answered by contacting Andrea Cottrill, music director at 825-0616.

Windmore Foundation's "Pen-to-Paper" Writers  will be meeting the first Tuesday of every month at The Depot in Culpeper from 10 a.m. until  noon.  Folks of all ages, using many genres, are encouraged to join in creative exercises using music, drama, and art. Guest speakers and fellow authors will give presentations and share writings through constructive critiquing. Bereavement Support Group from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Culpeper Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 1170 James Monroe Hwy., Culpeper. Learn about the bereavement process, discuss ways to cope with the pain, and talk to others that are experiencing the same thing you are in a safe and respectful setting.

Virginia Department of Health and Virginia Cooperative Extension: It's time to get ready for spring and summer food events! If you "Feed A Crowd" with your church group, youth group, rescue squad, fire department or other group then this class is for you. Members of your group learn food safety standards, food thermometer and glove use, and ways to keep food safe and clean. Each group will receive a food thermometer, hand washing posters, temperature booklet, local regulations on temporary events and other useful items.  Best of all the class is free. A certificate for completing the 4-hour class in the name of the organization with the participants' listed will be mailed at the conclusion of class. 
Class is held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the evening on April 12 at the Virginia Cooperative Extension, Culpeper Office 101 S. West St., Culpeper. Please bring a bag supper and eat while we talk. Archangel Arts Center: Pre-Drawing:  Thursdays, (4 weeks), April 12 - May 3, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Learn the fundamentals of drawing as you complete a final art project.  Subject matter includes: shapes, colors, lines and shading  (supplies included) Instructor: Tomas Fernandez, $45 ($40 AAC members). FRIDAY
Pearl Sample Elementary School PTO will present its Fun Fair, "Storyland," from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. featuring the Luray Zoo. The fun fair is promoting reading, so all of our games are based on stories with a grand prize being all of the books used in the games.

April 13-14
Shiloh Hope Builders will be having a mentor training class on Friday and Saturday at the Shiloh Hope Builders Office, 813 South Main St. The times will be as follows: April 13, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and April 14, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information please call Shelia Smith at 827-4539.

SATURDAY
Mitchells Presbyterian Church: There will be a steak dinner on April 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. The menu will consist of steak, veggies, salads, desserts, bread, beverages, all for $12 for adults; $5 for children 7-12; and children 6 and under eat free. Hot dogs will also be on the menu. Carryouts will be available and you may call the church office at 825-1079.

Multiple Sclerosis walk will be held at Yowell Meadow Park starting at 10 a.m. To register call the Blue Ridge Chapter office in Charlottesville, 1-800-451-0373. Come out and support this cause.

There will be a Sock Hop at Richardsville Volunteer Fire Department and Community Center from 6 to 11 p.m. with music starting at 7 p.m. Fifties style dress is encouraged. The cost is $5 per person. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. For more information call 540-399-1326.

The Fauquier Host Lions Club will sponsor the Lions Sight and Hearing Van at  IHOP on  from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We will be giving free eye exams, hearing test, glaucoma test and blood pressure screening.

Archangel Arts Center; Writing as Ministry:  From 9 a.m. to noon, ages 13 to 18, explore being called, getting started, nuts and bolts and seeking God's will.  In this workshop you will identify audience and perspective, edit a well-known author's work and write a short story or poem.  Instructor: Brenda Risner $30 ($25 AAC members). SCSM Volunteer and Facilitator Training from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Spiritual Care Support Ministry volunteer and facilitator training meetings, held four times yearly, keep those involved up to date with what is happening at the center and they are also an opportunity for continuing education. The Youth of New Salem Baptist Church present a Relay for Life fundraiser with chili and Gospel music starting at noon. Kevin Day's award winning chili will be prepared and served by the church youth for lunch along with other delicious goodies. Debbie Zinn and Natural Grass will perform after lunch.
