‘Manhattan,’ ‘Zenda’ and Disney toons

Bitter humor, swashbuckling action and classic animation light up the big screen in the LOC Packard Campus Theater on Mount Pony this weekend.
Tonight at 7:30, it’s Woody Allen’s Oscar-nominated “Manhattan” (United Artists, 1979). The movie turns 30 this year and is still right on the money. Rated R. With Diane Keaton, Muriel Hemingway, Meryl Streep and Michael Murphy.
Friday night, same time, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. blinds us with his talent and beauty in “The Prisoner of Zenda” (Selznick International Pictures, 1937), a royal love story involving identical cousins and one confused princess. A megastar of the silver screen, Fairbanks was born 100 years ago Dec. 9 in New York City. He died in 2000 after a career encompassing 100 or so films.
Finally, in a special Saturday matinee at 2 p.m., the LOC presents a rarely seen program of 15 Disney shorts dating from the late 1920s through 1995. Stay with the Star-Exponent and starexponent.com for more on Mickey, Goofy and crew and the curator behind Saturday’s animated festival.
