Culpeper Regional Airport
For 40 years, residents and visitors alike have taken to the skies from Culpeper Regional Airport.
Originally named T.I. Martin Culpeper Municipal Airport for a former mayor instrumental in getting the project off the ground, the existing airfield opened in the fall of 1968, replacing a smaller strip south of town.
Culpeper’s aviation history goes back to 1946, when the town and county went from having no public aviation facilities to having two. According to a 2003
article by airport manager Tanya Woodward, the airport located southwest of town was across from where the Best Western hotel stands today.
Culpeper County took over operations of the existing airport in 1989. It is located north of town, in the vicinity of Elkwood.
In 2004, the airport’s single runway was extended to 5,000 feet, allowing larger aircraft access to the county by air.
Now, a project to build a new airport terminal is under way. The county’s Airport Committee in April agreed to continue with design work on a replacement for the existing 39-year-old building. Under the current plan, the existing terminal would remain in use, supplemented by the new building. »
