Originally from Pennsylvania, Billy Wayland moved to Culpeper around age 7 and has been here since. He started with the town police in July 1963 at age 21, then went to work for the Sheriff’s Office a few years later. Back then, deputies had to use their own cars and were reimbursed 15 cents per mile. “Back in those days, if someone didn’t give it to you, you bought it,“ he said. Wayland also briefly ran his own construction business, but eventually returned to law enforcement. He lives in Culpeper with his wife, Jane, and works in the civil process division. Wayland said he plans to stay as long as the sheriff will keep him.
