Terremark | Technological transformation
Miami-based technology company Terremark is responsible for one of the more recent transformations of Culpeper County’s landscape.
In June, the first phase of the multi-year project, a 50,000 square foot data center, opened with a ceremony attended by 150 people.
It all began in January 2007, when Gov. Tim Kaine announced that the international data firm had selected Culpeper for its new Capital Region location. The $270 million project broke ground in late August 2007, taking up ground that once housed a winery (top).
During the opening ceremony, Terremark’s Chairman and CEO Manuel D. Medina repeatedly thanked Culpeper, saying the support of community leaders and elected officials made the project a success.
When completed, the campus (right) will house up to five data centers and a 72,000-square-foot office building. Several large globe-shaped antennas, called radomes, may also be added, causing motorists along U.S. 29 to do a doubletake. About 250 people are expected to eventually work in Culpeper.
Terremark says further expansion will be based on customer demand and that a timetable for further construction has not been set.
