For decades, hundreds of employees at the Virginia Department of Transportation have worked to keep Culpeper-area roads in top shape.

The agency that began as the State Highway Commission in 1906 eventually came to be known as VDOT in 1986.

In the Culpeper District, which includes eight other counties, VDOT employees supervise and maintain 70 miles of interstate highway, 730 miles of primary highway and more than 3,000 miles of secondary highways. U.S. highways in Culpeper County include 29, 15, 211 and 522. Major state routes include 3 and 229.

In addition its district headquarters on Orange Road, VDOT also has two residenices in the county.

Statewide budget shortfalls have stalled many transportation projects in Culpeper and elsewhere, but VDOT continues to play a major role in this community’s economy.
