Dominion weighing carbon capture project at plant

ST. PAUL, Va. — Dominion Virginia Power is still considering plans to build a carbon capture and storage project at its new Wise County plant, despite failing to secure federal stimulus money.
The utility had hoped stimulus funding would cover half the cost of the $580 million carbon capture facility at the new Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center. The 585-megawatt coal-fired power plant is scheduled to go online in 2012.
Dominion estimates the facility would annually remove and store underground 545,000 tons of carbon dioxide from plant emissions. Officials say the company is committed to installing carbon capture and storage equipment at the plant when it becomes commercially available.
