Harpers Ferry to show kids’ films about Brown raid

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va.— Seventy schoolchildren will have a permanent role in telling the story of John Brown’s 1859 raid on an arsenal in Harpers Ferry.
For months, Harpers Ferry Middle School students have been scripting, producing, directing and editing mini-movies that can be downloaded onto iPods and other multimedia players.
Two six-minute videos will be shown for the first time Thursday. Then they’ll be included in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park’s official interpretive materials
Chief historian Dennis Frye says it’s a great chance to let students connect the past to the present, retelling the Civil War story in their voices, using their vision and their medium.
The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership, based in Waterford, Va., sponsored the project.
