Rabid raccoon found in Sandston, dogs quarantined

SANDSTON, Va. — Henrico County police say a dead raccoon found in the backyard of a Sandston residence has tested positive for rabies.
Two Labrador retrievers at the residence have been quarantined for six months. Police say it’s not certain the dogs came into contact with the raccoon but both canines’ rabies shots expired two years ago.
The raccoon’s body was found Friday.
Henrico County’s Animal Protection unit is urging residents to keep rabies shots up to date and to avoid contact with any animals or pets that are acting oddly.
