Book signing today at Graffiti House

A Civil War-era landmark will host a book signing and discussion about the war today from 2-4 p.m.

Author Kenneth Garrett will sign copies of his newly released book, “The Journey Through Hallowed Ground: Birthplace of the American Ideal” at the Graffiti House in Brandy Station. The event is free and open to the public. The Graffiti House is located at 19484 Brandy Road.

Garrett’s book includes photos of the Graffiti House and Cedar Mountain battlefield, as well as other scenes along U.S. 15 from Gettysburg, Pa., to central Virginia.

In the early 1990s, with the threat of demolition looming, charcoal and pencil writings by soldiers from both armies were found on the second floor plaster walls of the Graffiti House.

Built in 1858, it served as a Confederate hospital following the cavalry battle at Brandy Station on June 9, 1863.

Union troops occupied the building later that year.
