Breastfeeding event strives for the ‘gold’
Cindy Curtis teaches the importance of breastfeeding to new mothers all the time.
The longtime Culpeper Regional Hospital lactation consultant, who works in the Family Birth Center, will be in her element this week as she hosts the Breastfeeding Awareness Seminar at the Powell Wellness Center Wednesday.
The free, two-hour event from 10 a.m. to noon will provide brochures on how to support breastfeeding moms, light snacks and chances to win baby-friendly prizes.
Breastfeeding Awareness Week began Friday and concludes Thursday. This year’s theme promotes an increased support for mothers striving to achieve the “gold standard of infant feeding.”
According to health experts, that means moms should breastfeed exclusively for the first six months and continue while introducing other foods into the child’s diet during the first year.
“Infants are meant to be breastfed,” Curtis wrote in a letter to the editor on page A5 today. “Breastfeeding provides the best possible start to life in all areas of development.”

My poor sister was a saunch support of breastfeeding and ate all the right things….she breast fed both of her boys. They were sickly most of their 1st 2 years of life. They didn’t even sleep at nights until they were well over 7 months old. I didn’t breastfeed; yet managed to have a wonderful bonding with my kids - they were never ill and slept well from 6 weeks onward. SO for those who are rabid anti-bottle; it doesn’t work for all, folks.
