Car seat safety at a glance
Infants — All infants should always ride in rear-facing car seats until they are at least a year old and weigh at least 20 pounds
Toddlers/Preschoolers — Children a year old and at least 20 pounds or more can ride in forward-facing car seats
School-aged — Booster seats are for older children who have outgrown their forward-facing car seats. Children should stay in a booster seat until an adult safety belt fits correctly usually when a child reaches 4-feet-9-inches and is between 8 and 12 years old.
Older children — Children who have outgrown their booster seats should ride in a lap and shoulder seat belt in the back seat until 13 years old

Did you know three out of four parents use child safety restraints in their vehicles improperly and accidental choking and suffocation are the leading causes of all injury death for infants under age 1?
Those statistics come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration — an organization that provides information to communities through development initiatives in an effort to reduce crashes and injuries — and the American Heart Association.
To help prevent injuries and educate the public, Culpeper Regional Hospital and the Culpeper Police Department have partnered for an educational seminar Wednesday evening.
The Infant CPR and Car Seat Safety class is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. inside Culpeper Regional Hospital’s Family Birth Center classroom.
The cost is $15 per couple.
A certified car seat installer from the Culpeper Town Police Department will demonstrate car seat safety and provide information on proper installation of car seats based on the state law.
A certified neonatal resuscitation provider instructor will teach parents and/or guardians what to do when a baby or child stops breathing or is choking.
This hands-on course will use the AHA guidelines, however, it’s not considered a certification course.
