For nearly six decades, Sister Rebecca Apperson has volunteered at her family’s church in Reva.

The 70-year-old parishioner sings, cooks and organizes special events on a weekly basis at Canaan Baptist Church on Shanktown Road where she’s been a devoted churchgoer for as long as she can remember.

For that dedication, nearly 250 worshippers threw Apperson a surprise appreciation celebration on Aug. 3 at the church to display their gratitude.

“I can pick up on most things, but not this time,” said Apperson, who said she was shocked to see her church filled with family and friends that evening.

During last month’s event, Apperson’s family members led the congregation in prayer, sang spiritual songs, and read poems.

“They did a beautiful job,” Apperson said of the entire celebration.

Sister Emma Richards, a former Culpeper Town Councilwoman, presented Apperson with a bouquet of flowers.

“It was absolutely beautiful,” Apperson said.

The Rev. Terry L Brown, Canaan Baptist Church pastor, delivered the call to worship and greeting and Brother Mark Caliandro served as the master of ceremonies during the two-hour event.

Organizers even created a program decorated with Apperson’s childhood pictures, family picnics and photos of her 50th wedding anniversary.

Sister Apperson and Carroll, 73 have two children: Carroll Jr. and Lutricia Toliver.

Apperson is the choir president, treasurer, a kitchen committee member, trustee and sang in the choir for 59 years.

She also lives a stone’s throw away from the church.
