Dasher, Goff file to run for School Board

So far, one incumbent and one candidate have filed to run for a seat on the Culpeper County School Board for the November election.

School Board Chairman George Dasher of the Stevensburg District filed last month following his announcement to seek re-election.

Dasher, 67, began his first term January 2006, replacing Barton Hitchcock, who chose not to seek re-election. His four-year term ends Dec. 31.

Candidate Richard Goff, 61, filed his paperwork Monday to run for School Board in the Cedar Mountain District.

Elizabeth Hutchins, 53, who is currently serving her second term as Cedar Mountain’s School Board representative, has yet to announce whether she’s seeking a third term.

Her term also ends Dec. 31.

Today is the deadline to file to run for School Board.

The third seat up for grabs is the Jefferson District.

School Board member Leanne Jenkins, 46, of the Jefferson District announced last month her plans to seek a third term.

According to Culpeper County Registrar Michele White, Jenkins and Hutchins have not filed.

A special election will be held in November for the West Fairfax District seat following Jimmy Lee’s recent announcement last month to resign.

Lee’s term began January 2008 and was to conclude Dec. 31, 2011. Lee will serve on the board until June 30.

Meanwhile, the School Board is accepting requests from qualified candidates to choose from to serve on the board for a short-term basis until Dec. 31.

By law, the School Board is allowed to appoint a qualified candidate following an unexpected vacancy. The board has plans to appoint someone during its June 22 work session at Central Office, 450 Radio Lane.

That person will begin serving on July 1.
