A Culpeper man escaped injury Tuesday morning after his dump truck overturned on U.S. 522 in the Winston area.

Charles L. Williams, 58, was headed to a local quarry when he apparently swerved to avoid a stopped car.

According to Sgt. Les Tyler of the Virginia State Police, Krystle Biedler was southbound on U.S. 522, half a mile north of Raccoon Ford Road. Waiting to make a left turn into a driveway, she looked in her rearview mirror and saw the dump truck crest the hill.

“I saw smoke coming from his tires, and I punched it,” Biedler said. “I looked back again and saw the dump truck pull to the right, hit the bank and flip over. It looked like everything was in slow motion.”

Tyler said the State Police, Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office, Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Department and a heavy duty wrecker cleared the scene in about an hour.

Trooper S.J. Riddle cited Williams for reckless driving.

those dump truck drivers need some kind of regulation. most of them are paid by the load and the more loads they can get in one day the more money they can make. So alot of them drive like fools for the almighty dollar.

You are not kidding csl. I’m the stopped car that was almost struck by the truck. I was at a dead stop and that truck popped the hill doing about 80. He left marks that were at least 240 feet long. The driver didn’t come up to me and ask if I was alright or anything. I asked on lookers if he was alright. Big trucks just fly up and down that road because of the quarry. I’m just glad nobody was hurt.

I live on Norman Rd. in Culpeper,& the Dump truck drivers that use this road as a short cut drive way to fast & reckless they take up 3/4 of the road ,you have to get in the ditch to keep from being side swiped by them.
The Big trucks are braking up the road ,which VDOT. has NO Money to Fix..
they start at 5 or 6 in the Morning till 6 or 7 at nite. With school out & Kids on bikes & walking to grandma’s house these trucks need to be more carefull about driving .
