A mulch fire at a Brandy Road business Saturday afternoon quickly spread to nearby U.S. 29 north of Culpeper, forcing police to close the highway in both directions temporarily.

Officials said the fire began around 2:30 p.m. at a business near the intersection of Brandy Road and Review Road, near the State Police barracks.

Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Department Chief Chris Brown said the fire on the mulch piles then jumped the rear of the property, along the shoulder and into the median of U.S. 29 about a mile north of the Brandy Road interchange. Brown said firefighters had the blaze under control about an hour later.

Although it was not immediately clear what sparked the fire, Brown blamed the blaze on warm temperatures and steady winds.

Culpeper Fire Co. Lt. Dicky Thomas said that visibility on the highway was nearly zero when he arrived on the scene. No injuries were reported.

Nate (author of article)—Good thing that the fire department had the correct address for the fire and did not rely on your reporting.  This fire did not occur at 16381 Brandy Road nor was the location Kearns Trucking and Stone Center.
