Hearing set for July 27 in Wilderness battle

» 2 Comments | Post a Comment

A July 27 public hearing is scheduled in Orange County on a Wal-Mart Supercenter proposed near the Wilderness Civil War battlefield.

The hearing scheduled by supervisors Tuesday night is the final step before the Board of Supervisors takes up the proposal. Supervisors have final say on the proposed 138,000-square-foot store.

Last week, the Planning Commission voted 5-4 to recommend approval of a special use permit for the store in Locust Grove. Supervisors do not have to heed the recommendation. The planned store has created a storm of protest among preservationists and historians. Wal-Mart contends the store will not harm the battlefield where 29,000 Union and Confederate soldiers were killed or injured 145 years ago.

Why do they waste their time. Orange County is determined to have that Walmart and nothing anyone can say will change their minds. A supermarket and parking lot built over graves of dead soldiers.
