Jail inmate dies in cell

Joseph Leroy Shifflett died in his cell at Culpeper County Jail Thursday.

Shifflett, 58, was serving two years on a probation violation.

According to Culpeper County Sheriff H. Lee Hart, Shifflett was seen around 3:20 p.m. and when an inmate tried to talk to him 40 minutes later he was unresponsive.

Medics tried to revive him but were unsuccessful, Hart said.

An autopsy report identified a stroke as the cause of death, Hart said.

The Virginia State Police is investigating.
