Jefferson District representative Leanne Jenkins says she’s ready for a third term on the Culpeper County School Board.
Jenkins, 46, who has eight years on the board, told the Star-Exponent Monday she plans to seek re-election in November.
The two-term veteran describes a successful student as one being challenged by the school system.
“The goal is to have students be able to learn everything that they can,” she said. “Students should be taught to read and write at a young age because their minds are like little sponges: They soak it up.”
No one has filed to run against Jenkins, who picked up a packet from the Culpeper County registrar’s office last week.
“I’m running again because I care,” she said. “I want us to have the best public educational system that we can.”
Jenkins works as a mental health provider for a private agency and as a substitute teacher for Fauquier County Public Schools.
The Fairfax native and Woodson High School graduate has two children who attend Culpeper County Public Schools.
Additionally, Jenkins — who has a child with special needs —serves on the Special Education Advisory Committee, CCPS Finance Committee, PREP Board and the CARES Board.
Three School Board seats are up for election.
Last week, School Board Chairman George Dasher (Stevensburg District) announced his plans to seek a second term.
Elizabeth Hutchins (Cedar Mountain District) has yet to announce if she plans to seek a third term. However, Richard Goff, who lives in the Cedar Mountain District, began collecting signatures earlier this year in an attempt to run for School Board.
As of Monday, Culpeper County Registrar Michele White said no School Board candidate has filed paperwork or turned in the required signatures.
The deadline to file is June 9.

Just because someone is on the board, doesn’t make them ‘part of past failures’. Each member has a mind of his/her own and majority rules. New and different isn’t always better. There’s a ‘good old boy’ network in Culpeper and members of that network sit on the school board. Leanne is not a ‘boy’. She could be replaced by one however. If you don’t know, really know, the members of our fair community, better learn it before election day!
As anyone who has followed this board’s actions the past two years can tell you, the only members truly concerned with the quality of education in this county are the two you reference. Mr. Dasher has merely catered to the majority’s political motivations on the pretext of keeping peace.
June 9 is the deadline for capable, commited citizens to file to run for our school board. If you want to strenghthen the public education provided to Culpeper children, the run for the School Board. Two of the three incumbents are part of past failures and rudderless lack of progress. Mr. Dasher has worked effectively to lead change and direction of the system. We need new ideas and representatives with experience in establishing sound educational policy.
