Culpeper’s Chamber of Commerce has recognized a town business for giving an old building a new life.
This summer, Analytical Services Inc. moved a couple of blocks down the street to its new home in an old house at 402 N. West St. Company president Michael Slivinski said it was important to remain downtown.
“Over the years,” he said, “I have seen many improvements made, particularly downtown, and have truly admired the work that has been done to restore the historic area and to attract people and businesses. We wanted to locate close to downtown, which is now such an attractive business environment.”
Slivinski also appreciates the convenience of being close to town and county government offices, as well as being able to entertain clients at nearby restaurants.
For its restoration work, the chamber recognized Analytical Services as the most improved small business location for 2008.
Inside, wood floors greet visitors. Marble graces the foyer and bathrooms. The building sports a new roof, windows, siding and garage.
A conference room was added, and the entire office is wired for technology. A small deck in the rear and new landscaping — including several newly planted linden trees — round out the list of improvements.
Slivinski headed up renovation of the home, which he said dates to the early 1900s. When beginning to look for office space two years ago, his goal was to find and preserve an older property in town while creating a good business space.
“So when the opportunity to purchase this property became evident,” he said, “we decided rather than constructing a commercial building from the ground up on the edge of town somewhere, this was a chance not only to locate close to the city center, but also utilize our resources to give back to the community.
“Although we could not save many of the materials in the old house … we did the best we could to preserve the look, period architecture and character of the original structure.”
Michael Maloy, a senior geologist and principal with the company, said the best thing about the new location is the extra office and storage space, things that were lacking at the old office.
A large part of the company’s work is groundwater supply and environmental consulting. Analytical Services employs about 50 people and also has offices in Maryland and North Carolina.
The company moved in this summer after the renovations were complete. Maloy said it may host an open house soon once a few more finishing touches are wrapped up.
Slivinski thanked local building officials for personally helping the company tackle issues as they came up.
“I’ve worked in Culpeper for going on 20 years,” he said. “It’s a great community to live and work in.”
