Despite the looming 11:59 deadline to mail your income taxes to the Internal Revenue Service, the Culpeper Post Office will be closing its downtown office at 5 p.m. April 15.
Donna Culbertson, postmaster of the Main Street location, said if you already have postage, you have until 6 p.m. to drop off your mail in the dropbox before the truck leaves.
The Stevensburg Post Office will also close at 5 p.m.
The Brandy Station location will close at 4:30 p.m.
In Rixeyville, the doors close at 4:30 p.m., according to the United State Post Office Web site.
“Taxpayers who owe taxes and don’t file their tax return by the deadline may face interest on the unpaid taxes and a failure-to-file penalty,” the IRS Web site states. “Interest and penalties add to the total amount a taxpayer owes. Filing by the dead-line allows taxpayers to avoid the failure-to-file penalty, even if they can’t pay all or some of their taxes by the deadline.”
