Additional charges have been filed against a man suspected of robbing and shooting an employee at the West Side Grocery on Sperryville Pike Wednesday morning.

Police today charged Stephen R. Leavell, 18, of the 200 block of East Williams Street, with aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, wearing a mask, use of a sawed-off shotgun and cutting, stabbing or wounding in the commission of a felony.

Leavell also faces a charge of armed robbery. Authorities said a problem with the magistrate’s computer system prevented them from filing the additional charges on Wednesday. He is being held without bond.

Police say the incident began around 10:22 Wednesday morning when Leavell is believed to have entered the store, demanded money and pulled a sawed off shotgun the gun on the unidentified 49-year-old clerk.

Police said today that the victim is in stable condition at a Charlottesville hospital.
