BUCKINGHAM—A $55 debt apparently led to a Friday night shooting, according to Buckingham County Sheriff W.G. “Billy” Kidd Jr.

At about 4:30 p.m., deputies responded to a reported shooting in the 7500 block of Ridge Road in the Arvonia area, Kidd said.

At the scene, deputies found a man with a gunshot wound to his leg. The victim was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center with a non-life-threatening injury.

The victim told deputies that Eric Lamont Hughes shot him, Kidd said.

Deputies later found Hughes at his home in Arvonia and arrested him without incident, the sheriff said.

Hughes, 39, was upset about the debt, which the victim had owed him for a year, Kidd said.

“That’s the reason he gave us,“ the sheriff said.

Hughes faces malicious wounding and firearm charges and is being held at the Piedmont Regional Jail.
