PWC hosts Walking Program for seniors
There are fitness programs. And then there are the ones that not only benefit the waistline, but the wallet as well.
The American Association of Retired Persons announced earlier this month that the Powell Wellness Center would host a free 10-week Walking Program for seniors ages 50 and older beginning Sept. 15.
This initiative is part of an extensive AARP goal to help prevent illness and keep senior citizens well through positive changes such as diet and exercise.
“Walking is one of the easiest ways to get in shape,” said Sandy Boone, PWC director. “You just need a pair of comfortable shoes and a little motivation to get you there and start moving. To say the least, we at (the) Powell Wellness Center are very excited to participate in this event with AARP, which allows us to facilitate positive changes in the lives of those in our community.”
According to recent studies, walking 30 minutes a day for five days a week can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, arthritis and some cancers.
More than 50,000 people have participated in AARP’s 10-week walking programs in 28 states within the last three years, according to its Web site.
In an AARP survey, it was discovered that 74 percent of its members prefer walking over any other types of physical activity.
This program will help participants find safe places to walk, and provide the tools and support to help seniors take personal responsibility for their health and maintain their exercise strategies.
Each participant will receive a free step counter and guidebook.
The Powell Wellness Center will provide program information on its Web site beginning Sept. 1.
