Registrar’s office moves to former Wachovia Bank

Attention voters: the Culpeper County Registrar's Office has moved.

Formerly located in that little brown building on West Davis Street, across from the old town hall, the voting office is now located around the corner at 151 N. Main St. in the former Wachovia Bank building.

The move began Thursday and with the help of numerous county employees was completed by the next day.

"We're in good shape," said Culpeper County Registrar Michele White, who was hosting a pizza party in the new office Friday for everyone who helped. "It went very smoothly. I wasn't stressed because I had so much help."

All voter registration and absentee voting will now be taken care of at the North Main Street location. The county purchased the 105-year-old building last summer for $1.5 million; it rented the former space on West Davis, which the registrar's office had occupied since the '60s.

The move came less than a month before the Nov. 6 election, but all systems were up and running as of Friday.

The registrar's office will be closed Monday for Columbus Day. However, the last day to register to vote is Tuesday, and the office will be open until 5 p.m.

The last day to vote absentee by mail is Oct. 30; the last day for a person to vote absentee in person at the registrar's office is Nov. 3.

White said the new registrar's office - located in the old bank lobby - offers about the same amount of space as the old place. The plan is to eventually move upstairs, once the elevator is installed, and other county offices will move into the first floor.

Another change that will happen sooner than that is a switch in a voting location. Starting with November's election, the Brown's Store polling location will move from Champion Chevrolet to the Reva Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department, off U.S. 29 at 18230 Birmingham Road.

"The electoral board has been working hard to get this change in place before the November election," White said. "Voters will see improved parking, a better area dedicated to voting and an-overall much better facility."

About 2,600 voters will be affected.
