A familiar Virginia bank has undergone a name change.

Downtown passersby may have noticed Second Bank & Trust no longer overlooks the corner of Main and Davis Streets; instead the fresh paint on the sign reads StellarOne.

StellarOne Corp. announced Tuesday it completed the merger of its banking and trust subsidiaries, including First National Bank in Christiansburg, Planters Bank and Trust Co. of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth Bank and Second Bank & Trust.

The combined group, based in Christiansburg, was renamed StellarOne Bank.

“I just visited our client contact center and we’ve had a high volume of calls,” said Linda Caldwell, director of marketing for StellarOne. “But the customers are being so kind and gracious and seem excited about the products. We haven’t had any issues that we need to take care of, but I may not have talked to every customer.”

Caldwell, who is based in Charlottesville but has an office in Culpeper, said StellarOne customers could now bank at 64 full-service branches with more than 80 ATMs.

The StellarOne market stretches from the New River Valley to the Roanoke and Shenandoah valleys and into central Virginia.

According to a company press release, StellarOne is the largest community bank based in Virginia.

The bank offers business and consumer banking services, including trust and asset-management services.

O.R. Barham Jr. is president and chief executive officer for StellarOne Corp. and Gregory W. Feldmann is president and chief executive officer for StellarOne Bank.

Raymond D. Smoot Jr. will serve as chairman of StellarOne Bank. Independent directors include H.C. Stuart Cochran, Jennie T. Allman, John J. “Butch” Davies, James S. Day Jr., Michael M. Kessler, Alan Myers, Greg C. Raetz, Joe Sheffey, Joe J. Thompson and Keith L. Wampler.

“Because we’ve got the same dedicated personnel and employees,” Caldwell said, “we think that this is going to give our customers an increased focus on a real standard of excellence and service.”
