School Board meets tonight

The Culpeper County School Board will hold a special public meeting tonight starting at 6:30 at Central Office, 450 Radio Lane, to continue discussion about its longtime superintendent’s imminent departure.

According to School Board Chairman George Dasher, David Cox, 46, plans to vacate his position as head of the school system Tuesday, taking a yearlong paid “sabbatical.”

Dasher made the announcement late Friday night after the board’s closed session at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria.

He hopes to release further details Monday about Cox’s exit.

“We’ve got to get ourselves reorganized around his absence,” he said Sunday afternoon.

Cox will provide “consulting and transition services” to the board during the coming school year, then resign June 30, 2009.

His four-year contract, which expires in 2011, guarantees the former superintendent his $130,000 annual income, a school car and gas allowance.

However, if Cox finds employment — which he must pursue after the first year — the contract will terminate.

In addition to the discussion about Cox, the board plans to discuss personnel, the capital improvement plan, year-end reports, and a resolution of appreciation at the special session.

When the last contract was signed, Dr. Cox was still in the Board’s good graces (old board). You are right, the school board is amazingly stupid, and we ARE the laughing stock of the state of Virginia…between our school board and board of supervisors. Watch out Culpeper, you will probably see a mass exodus of teachers.

Hobo:
It’s the price of lack of planning.  If he doesn’t find employment, then he’ll still get paid, according to this article anyway.

I’ve never accused either county board of being able to plan any further then the fronts of their noses. Issue, after issue, after issue….

And now they create one of their own.

What kind of idiot would sign a contract like that. What if Cox pursues but doesnt find employment after a year. Do we still pay him, give him a car and gas allowance until 2011. Who in their right mind would find something like that. The school board never ceases to amaze me.
