Sen. Edd Houck, D-Spotsylvania, added another award to his vast collection last month.
The Virginia School Board Association presented Houck, who represents Virginia’s 17th District, with the 2009 Legislator of the Year award during its annual convention in Williamsburg Nov. 18 for his work toward enhancing K-12 education.
“I am proud of my working relationship with the association and the school boards throughout my district and the commonwealth,” Houck said Tuesday morning.
Houck, who represents Culpeper, Louisa, Madison, Orange and parts of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania, announced his retirement from public education in 2007 after 34 years of service. He is now director of corporate and community programs for Medicorp in Fredericksburg.
Houck has nearly 50 awards listed on his Web site for his work toward public health, education, public safety, farming, and environmental and conservation issues.
This year, Houck has received the Child Advocate Award from the Virginia PTA Association, the Alzheimer’s Advocate Award from the Virginia Alzheimer’s Association Greater Richmond Chapter and an appreciation award from the Commonwealth Autism Service.
The purpose of VSBA Legislator of the Year award is to recognize lawmakers or state officials who have worked diligently on behalf of public education and the VSBA.
“As chairman of the Senate Education and Health Committee and a member of the Senate Finance Committee, he has fought for the funding to fully support the standards of quality,” Houck’s recommendation letter reads.
