Senior citizens get an early treat for Thanksgiving

RAPIDAN — For the past seven years, the congregation of White Oak Run Baptist Church has held a bountiful Thanksgiving meal for seniors. This year, the tradition continues with a free senior luncheon today at Germanna Community College’s Culpeper campus.

Over 250 seniors from throughout the community are expected to be in attendance at the Daniel Center for Advanced Technology. And even if you haven’t signed up yet, the church encourages seniors to show up at the door.

The meal includes a full turkey dinner for seniors who, otherwise, may not get that opportunity on Thanksgiving.

In the past, choirs, a pianist and occasionally a violinist or saxist provided music. This year, while keeping some music in the program, local officials have been invited to participate.

“They need to see the impact it has on the seniors,” said the Rev. Charlene Phillips, associate pastor and head of the Culpeper Ministerial Association. “Then we, as a community, can do more things for all seniors. It’s all about giving back.”

Phillips praised the work of church member Marian Taliaferro, who spearheads the luncheon each year.

The Rev. Jacob M. Phillips, pastor at White Oak Run since 1992, said the church formerly held the meal only among its congregants. Then, eight years ago, it became an outreach ministry to recognize contributions seniors have given to the community.

Today’s event starts at 10:30 a.m. with music from the White Oak praise team, followed by greetings from community officials. After lunch, the White Oak Run praise dancers will perform.

As many as nine people from Culpeper United Methodist Church will provide assistance during the luncheon.

“Reaching out to people, especially seniors, is a mandate of Jesus,” said Nancy Palmer, director of adult ministries at CUMC. “Jesus said people will know we are Christians by our love.”

Personalized goodie bags will be provided for each senior, and door prizes will be available.
