A 58-year-old Culpeper County Jail inmate died in his cell Thursday, according to Sheriff H. Lee Hart.

Joseph Leroy Shifflett was seen around 3:20 p.m. that day, but when another inmate tried to talk to him 40 minutes later, he was unresponsive, Hart said.

Medics and deputies tried to revive Shifflett with CPR and a defibrillator. The Virginia State Police is investigating the death according to protocol, Hart said.

Hart did not comment on Shifflett's medical history but said the preliminary autopsy report states Shifflett died of a stroke.

"The Virginia State Police worked the investigation and there is no issue of foul play," Hart said.

The state Medical Examiner's Office could not be reached for comment due to the Columbus Day holiday.

Shifflett had been an inmate since August and was serving two years on a probation violation.
