Single-vehicle crash kills 8-year-old boy

A single-car crash killed an 8-year-old Remington boy in the northern part of Culpeper County Friday night, according to the Virginia State Police.
Orion Bickings was riding in a 1999 Acura four-door eastbound on Lakota Road about a mile west of Clover Hill Road around 10:20 p.m. when the incident occurred.
The driver, Fielding Taylor Kines, 38, of Remington apparently lost control of the vehicle and ran off the left side of the road, went over an embankment and rolled several times before he struck a wooden fence and landed in a field.
Bickings died at the scene.
Neither Kines, nor his 5-year-old passenger were injured. Tyler said they were both wearing seatbelts but Bickings wasn’t.
Trooper J.K. Hathaway re-sponded to the scene.
Members of the Virginia Bureau of Investigations and the accident investigations team assisted with this investigation. Culpeper’s sheriff’s deputies and local rescue and fire departments also responded to the scene.
Tyler urges motorists to al-ways utilize their seatbelts at all times when traveling in vehicles.
Kines was charged with man-slaughter, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving on a suspended license.
Kines’ girlfriend is the mother of both children. She was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Sounds like a horrific accident.  Shows how important it is to be buckled up. I wish that instead of trying to scare us that we will get a ticket (recent mass media campaign) if we don’t buckle up they will instead remind us of these kinds of accidents…..So another drunk driving accident. Was it only last week that the drunk driver who killed the teacher was sentenced to 10 years?  Can’t imagine that this would be any different just because the victim was a passenger.  In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he will face an additional charge dealing with his lack of having all child passengers buckled. Children deserve better.  Any ideas on how this can be prevented again?  The 10 years for the teacher killer didn’t seem to have any effect on Kines.  How about less consumption of alcohol?

at the hands of a drunk driver?  Just last Sunday-Mothers Day-a Warrenton 8-yr old child died in a wreck caused by a drunk driver.
My heart goes out to these 2 little angels-God Bless the child.
