Tough guys and broads this month on Mount Pony

The Library of Congress Packard Campus Theater on Mount Pony took time off this weekend so Uncle Sam could pay some bills.

But no sweat. The free movies return Thursday with a month’s worth of classics celebrating tough guys and even tougher broads.

October also features an Italian flick about a Bavarian princess and “Alien” (20th Century Fox, 1979) on Halloween night. Walt Disney’s Fantasia from 1940 screens Saturday at 2 p.m. and seats are expected to fill quickly.

Silver screen stars Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Barbara Stanwyck, Gary Cooper and James Stewart all grace the big-screen on Mount Pony this month, appearing in gangster and/or down-and-out titles like, “Jezebel” (Warner Bros., 1938), “Angels With Dirty Faces” (Warner Bros., 1938) and “The Last Gangster” (Warner Bros., 1937).

A special Sunday matinee Oct. 25 will feature an all-shorts program celebrating the 100th anniversary of The Thanhouser Co., an early film studio based in New Rochelle, N.Y.

The company made more than 1,000 soundless movies in less than a decade before closing up shop in 1917.

Ned Thanhouser, a descendant of the silent movie clan, will introduce the films and house musician Andrew Simpson will be at the piano.

Make reservations Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. one week in advance of the show at (540) 827-1079 ext. 79994.

Movies in the theater at the LOC Packard Campus Center for Audiovisual Conservation on Mount Pony screen Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
