A vintage truck ignited a garage fire on Friday, nearly destroying a home on Eggbornsville Road, according to fire officials.

Salem Fire Chief Mike Bailey said the fire began around 12:15 p.m. at 13004 Eggbornsville Road as a man was fixing his truck inside the garage. As he was working on the pickup, it backfired, causing it to catch on fire and spread to the garage.

Bailey estimates the damages may cost between $8,000 and $10,000.

The fire was contained within the detached garage and did not spread to the home. No one was injured. More than five engines and about 35 fire and rescue workers responded to the blaze.

The Pack family lives at the address.
