Water and sewer back on tap

The Culpeper County Board of Supervisors and Culpeper Town Council resume talks tonight regarding the complex proposal for a regional water and sewer authority and town boundary expansion.

The public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in room 221 of the Daniel Technology Center.

The two local governing bodies last met on the utility issue Jan. 14 though the general discussion has been ongoing for at least a decade.

Cooler heads seemed to prevail at the recent meeting as the gathering of 15 elected officials reached something like consensus on key points of a deal that would: 1) have the town give up ownership of its multi-million dollar water and sewer system to an independent authority that would manage and set rates for the town and county of Culpeper and 2) allow the town to grow its borders in exchange.

The town and county are expected to continue to work on the details of such an agreement at tonight’s meeting.

The plan is to reach a final agreement by June.
