A Rixeyville man facing 23 felony drug and sex charges is free on bond, despite objections from prosecutors.
James E. Denton, 43, of the 9000 block of Dunkard Church Road, faces:
* 11 counts of rape against a person under age 13
* six counts of forcible sodomy against a person under age 13
* three counts of possessing a firearm while in possession of drugs
* possession with intent to distribute marijuana
* possession of drug paraphernalia
* aggravated sexual battery.
At a bond hearing Monday, Circuit Court Judge John G. Berry ruled against arguments from Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Dale Durrer, who sought to keep Denton in custody.
Berry cited Denton’s lack of criminal history and the fact that he moved away from Culpeper, which is where the sex crimes are alleged to have occurred, as reasons for granting the $25,000 secured bond.
Denton was arrested July 8 on the drug charges. The drug and sex offenses are not directly linked.
Court documents from the Oct. 20 term of the grand jury show that Denton was indicted for sexually abusing a child “who was less than 13 years of age.” Identified only by the initials MF, the victim’s gender is not clear in the court documents.
The documents also indicate the alleged sex crimes occurred over a six-month period from December 2007 until June.
Records show that Warrenton-based attorney Jud A. Fischel is representing Denton.
Denton is set for arraignment Nov. 25 at 10:30 a.m.
Reader Reactions
Hey familyjustice…you can say whatever you want. And defend him to your hearts content. That’s wonderful and I wish you luck. Whatever the case, I am posting what I saw before the dockets were updated, as well as my opinion -note:(not a professional one) about him. Which I am entitled to do under my First Amendment rights, as long as my comments are not slanderous, untrue, obscene and do not violate any child pornography laws. Which they do not. After all, this is a “readers response” blog, and..I am a reader that happens to know this guy! Apparently there are others as well on here that know him too. One in particular, I am unsure of and think that maybe he himself posted it in order to have at least one comment besides yours that sticks up for him. -note:(my opinion which is not a professional one) I don’t have to point out which one, I’m sure-note:(in my opinion which is not a professional one)...you already know. Either way, I wont say anymore on here because all it’s become is some game with you just like everything seems to be with him
-note:(in my opinion, which is not a professional one). Again, I’ll agree with you and say, you’re right! Innocent until proven guilty! Well, we’ll see…wont we? In the meantime…all who know James Denton, please refrain from posting any other comments. Be them good or bad. Afterall, we DO, BY ALL MEANS want to make sure his Sixth Amendment rights are abided by. (Hmmm, I wonder if you’ll have to look that up…?)
Again, good luck and Happy Holidays!
He may not go by Jimmy now but I have known him for a very long time and to me his name is Jimmy. I have seen more then you know. I have been there since the beginning I never said that he didn’t love his children and I never said that he was guilty of anything. I was just giving my opinion on the character that I know, Lord knows that people change and for all involved I hope that the charges are false.
Hi tropical blues… so i looked up that site. nothing on there says he didn’t show. you’re a little misguided. yes, there was a capias. but that doesn’t mean there was a warrant. yes, in the general sense of the term you would be right. but everything was continued. therefore, they told him to go home, (not to jail) and come back on the 3rd - which he did. stop, writing things you know nothing about - especially when you weren’t there.
In response to the latest two commments, I would just like to say that I know the accused very well, considering I am one of his exes. He has always been there for his children and takes responsibility for them. Second, he does not go by Jimmy. While we are no longer together and we don’t get along very well, I know what type of father and person that he is - and it is not what you are trying to portray him as. I don’t like him, but don’t lie about him - especially in a situation as serious as this.
I agree with “tropicalblues” I have known this “man” for far too long, and he is a liar and manipulator. With Jimmy it is always someone else’s fault. I have NEVER seen him take responsibility for his actions. Including being a father! Anyway I know that people close to others who are accused of crimes that are this awful don’t want to believe that someone they know would do something like this but unfortunately it happens all the time. Godspeed to the family and child in this time of need, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
No, it wasn’t a lie. I was going by what the court dockets said http://wasdmz2.courts.state.va.us/CJISWeb/circuit.html
Just go there and see for yourself. Yeah, I know who you are and I wont say on here. And I am supprised as heck that you would take up for him after all he has said and done to you. I am absolutley appalled!!! Maybe cause he’s very close family to you all of a sudden? Ever think of that? Why NOW has he decided to call you and spend time with you? Because he is manipulating you like he’s done all of us over the years! WAKE UP and smell the doodoo! Cause that is ALL he is omitting!! I feel so sorry for you.
so if you know him so well like you say you do, then how is it that someone else (who really does know him) has a totally different opinion. if you know him so well, then you know what you said earlier was a lie. he is out on a 25,000 dollar bond… but you know most cases cost a whole lot more than that (if they even get that chance)- lack of evidence maybe? or maybe its false allegations…hmm - sounds about right.
To all, he’s not in Culpeper. He’s residing in Bealeton! FOR FACT! As far as “familyjustice” goes, they are a family member I’m sure. HENCE THE NAME “FAMILYJUSTICE”. THAT ALONE IS A DEAD GIVAWAY!It’s hard to believe your own family member would do such a thing. And you are right. Innocent until proven guilty. But remember, some people actually know this guy, and know what he’s capable of and have seen it first hand. And one of those people is me. I know first hand he is an excellent manipulator, and a compulsive liar! And a horrible, horrible excuse for a human being!
I’m not sure “and the fact that he moved away from Culpeper, which is where the sex crimes are alleged to have occurred” is a good enough reason, nor is his lack of criminal history. So he moved from Culpeper and now he’s in Rixeyville. (Typical “not in my backyard” thinking.) Guess what—we have kids under 13 here, too. That’s one of the stupidest reasons I’ve ever heard for freeing someone on bond. And no one has a criminal record till you’re caught. He got caught—keep him locked up!
when somebody is charged with a crime against a child everybody wants to fry the person suposedly responsible. Wait for the facts to come out before you judge somebody
