A Phoenix School student was suspended Monday after authorities found a non-functional .25-caliber handgun in his possession at Culpeper County High School’s annex building.
The Phoenix School provides alternative education for students with disabilities in Culpeper, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. after another student alerted school personnel.
“The student was already in isolation from the rest of the student body because of his agitated behavior,” said Pearl Jamison, spokeswoman for Culpeper County Public Schools.
Jamison, deputy clerk for CCPS, said the student was not from Culpeper but did not specify in which county he lives. She also did not release the student’s age.
Corey Byers, spokeswoman for the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office, said deputies determined the gun could not be fired because a firing pin was missing.
The student was charged with possession of a weapon on school property and taken into custody.
This case is under investigation.

What does what county the student is from have to do with the school system’s inability to keep guns out of our schools?
Headlines can be tricky can’t they? This headline makes it appear as if the student attends the CCPS Alternative Ed. program. Then, when you read the article you find out the student is an out-of-the county student and he attends the Phoenix school upstairs from the alternative ed program.
