A 17-year-old male student at Eastern View High School was arrested Nov. 3 for bringing a gun to school, according to the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office.

The EVHS junior face charges of possessing a firearm and controlled substance.

On Oct. 8, a parent complained to EVHS Principal Roger Mello that her child saw a handgun inside another student’s book bag earlier that day.

Marla McKenna, spokeswoman for Culpeper County Public Schools, said school officials immediately contacted the Sheriff’s Office and expelled the student. He has not been at school since Oct. 8.

“No threats or motive for carrying the weapon were identified during the course of the initial investigation,” McKenna said. “Because the weapon was not recovered at school, it is not clear if it was loaded.

“The school division is asking students and parents to remain ever vigilant and alert teachers and school officials if they see or hear something suspicious at school.”

Because the student is a minor, his identity was not made available. It is not clear what type of gun or drugs the student is accused of carrying.
