The case of an 18-year-old man accused of shooting at another man, then crashing his car while fleeing from police last month will go before a grand jury next week, court records show.

Terrence Shipp Jr. of Culpeper faces felony charges of attempted murder, malicious wounding, assault and battery on an officer and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

A misdemeanor charge of recklessly handling a firearm stemming from the same incident was indefinitely suspended.

Judge Edward Carpenter certified the charges to the grand jury in General District court Thursday afternoon. Shipp remains in custody.

According to prosecutors, the incident began on Nov. 7 at a residence in the 8000 block of Lake Rillhurst Drive near Norman Road.

During a Nov. 12 bond hearing, Commonwealth’s Attorney Gary Close told the court that Shipp is suspected of pistol-whipping, then shooting at another man after they got into an argument.

Close said the victim was acquainted with Shipp and gave police a description of a getaway car.

Later that evening, a State Trooper spotted the vehicle, but police say Shipp refused to stop and led them on a chase through three counties before wrecking the car on Route 3 about a mile east of U.S. 522.

Shipp was hospitalized for two days for injuries sustained in the crash, while the unidentified pistol-whipping victim’s injuries were described as minor.
