Five people were arrested Tuesday morning in a countywide sweep for illegal immigrants, officials announced in an afternoon press conference.

About 35 town officers, sheriff’s deputies, state agents, members of the regional Blue Ridge Narcotics Task Force and federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials met at the Culpeper Police Department around 3:30 a.m., where they organized into four teams which were dispatched in search of 19 individuals. Representatives of all the agencies called the effort a success.

According to a statement from the town, all five people arrested face federal charges. They were held briefly in the Culpeper County Jail before federal agents assumed custody of them late Tuesday afternoon, Sheriff Jim Branch said.

“Given the nature of who we were going after, it was pretty good,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Gary Close, whose office also assisted in the raids.

Tuesday’s sweeps were targeted toward actual or suspected gang members, people who had returned to the U.S. after being deported, and those Culpeper Police Chief Scott Barlow described as “frequent flyers” — people who have minor, but recurring problems with the law.

After a briefing at the police department, the teams mustered on Cameron Street around 5 a.m. before proceeding to their target locations. Some of the team members donned military-style combat uniforms with masks, while others in plain clothes got into unmarked SUVs and sedans. Local officers in marked patrol vehicles accompanied the teams.

Officials reported that one man was captured after a short foot chase, while another suspect was found hiding under a bed.

Barlow said one person picked up today was wanted in New York on a weapons charge.

None of the people arrested Tuesday morning were identified by name.

Background and next steps
The raids were part of a collaborative effort begun a year ago with the creation of a Culpeper County Gang Task Force.

Officials said Tuesday’s raids weren’t the first and won’t be the last, adding that it was impossible to know how long the fallout from this latest effort would resonate through the community. Everyone also agreed that they sensed the number and presence of illegal immigrants in Culpeper has decreased recently.

The local officials acknowledged that while ICE is unable to address every immigration issue that may arise in Culpeper, the efforts and resources of the federal agents are pointed in the right direction. Based in Harrisonburg, two ICE agents are assigned to cover 22 counties. Gesturing to a stack of papers on the table, Close said 1,842 names have been faxed to federal officials since June 2006.

“Our policy at the P.D. — and I’m pretty sure the sheriff’s office is very similar — is when it comes to illegals,” said Barlow, “we are also targeting the known criminals and the gang members because that’s what ICE is willing to come get.” Branch agreed.

While gang activity may exist in Culpeper County, the officials also agreed that it hasn’t reached a crisis point, thanks to the work of the gang task force.

“If you look at the threat to the community, certainly I think ICE is on the right track with their limited manpower and resources,” Barlow said. “They are going after the worst of the worst and looking at those individuals that would harm our community”

And while some may not see illegal immigrants and their criminal activity as a serious issue, the officials insisted that most people would probably disagree with that sentiment.

“I think the vast majority of people in the community want us to step up to the plate and target known criminals,” said Barlow. “If we came across one target we thought was worthwhile, we’d get on the phone, call ICE, and they’d come down and take care of it for us.”

For all that effort and Police presence you only found 5 illegals in Culpeper?  Maybe next time, don’t announce your presence by hanging out at the local Police dept parking lot and then so many illegals won’t be tipped off and hide. Legal immigrants are welcome here any time, the illegal ones need to go. If they want to come here, do it legally as others have for decades. The whole issue boils down to either following the law or breaking it. If you come here illegally, then you are illegal no matter how some try to justify it. It is the same for breaking any other laws, excuses don’t justify it, but some will continue to say only certain laws should be followed, what a joke. Illegal is still illegal!

Wow, five individuals COUNTYWIDE.  Gee, Steve Jenkins and others call 5 people a significant illegal immigration problem in Culpeper?  It’s a shame it takes a year’s work to arrest only five people.

Those are the two most ignorant comments!  So the first comment wants to allow illegals in our country to join gangs and commit crimes and build a shelter for them, well you must be one yourself.  As for the 2nd comment, Steve Jenkins has the right message, get rid of the illegals, they cost us tax money dollars, overflow our school system, etc.  It’s too bad there are so much ignorance out there still.

to put forth this much effort to catch 5 people….i hope they were serious criminal elements, if not, it was a tremendous waste of time and resources.  here is the solution to illegal immigration:  stop hiring illegal’s!!  they are here for employment opportunities, so if all the “landscapers” and “tree servicers” stop hiring them, they won’t be here.  the people that hire the illegal’s are the people that Jenkins and the council should be going after…but they won’t.  probably friends and relatives.

The police are not racist Solon.  These individuals picked up are criminal offenders who violated criminal laws in this country.  ICE takes the worst offenders as they did in this case.  Unfortunately they can’t take all when we detain and arrest them.  Why is it racist to enforce the law?  Regardless of where you come from if you break the law you must face the consequences.  These individuals were not picked up for unlawful presence which is administrative.  They were picked up for criminal charges.  So if I arrest an illegal alien on criminal charges and contact ICE would I be a racist?  I support equal protection under the law for everyone to include illegal aliens.  I also support that they can be charged just like anyone else in this country when they break the law.

I don’t support building them a shelter.  The site in Herndon has closed down.  Yes they have a legal right under the constitution to solicit for work but I don’t feel that we should spend tax dollars to build them a shelter.

Yes Jimmy Jones no doubt that Steve Jenkins would be standing around.  All he lives for and cares about is illegal immigration.  He has no other concerns for this community other than to make the front page of the paper and promote his media circus side show.

Not all of those day laborers looking for work are criminal offenders or gang members.  But those we apprehend that meet that criteria need to face the consequences for violating federal, state and local laws.  It does make sense if you really think about it.

In regards to what “Solon” had to say, these people are here ILLEAGALLY… why should we leave them alone? Do you want your job to be taken by one of these people who doesn’t belong in this country so that he or she can make money to send back to their home or their gang memebers in a different country? As far as I’m concerned I think its great that the ICE is collecting them. They should collect more and do this sweep more often. Culpeper is becoming a hub for illegal immigrants to come to because they know nothing will be done and if something is done its just a slap on the wrist.
Why build them something with our tax money. If you want it built, you supply all the funds to build it. I don’t want my tax money to go to building a shelter for illegals, no one would do that for me if I was an illegal nor would they do it for you. Think about it!

OK, five people are arrested.  For what? inquiring minds might like to know.  What are they charged with?  Is that too much to ask?  One weapons charge in NY.  What else?  Again the unsubstantiated charge that there are gangs in Culp. But no evidence.  And further there is the claim that the reason there is no crisis of gangs in culp is “thanks to the work of the task force”.  Yet nothing to back that claim up.

And who was walking away from Town Square shopping center this morning around 8?  None other than Steve Jenkins.  Just had to see it happen, huh Steve?

Why can’t the racist police leave these poor people alone.  All these undocumented workers want is to keep coming after they have been kicked out, belong to a gang or commit crimes.  Why don’t we build them a shelter instead like they did in Herndon?

We all have immigrant ancestors.  No doubt most of them only wanted the same things as any immigrant wants:  to keep coming in after being kicked out, to belong to a gang or to commit crimes.
