A Culpeper man faces 36 felony and misdemeanor charges, accused of forging checks and stealing money from the estate of Culpeper County’s former long time registrar who died in June.
Wayne E. Boone, 37, of the 700 block of Briscoe Street, faces 12 felony counts each of forgery and uttering. Boone also faces three felony and nine misdemeanor counts of obtaining money under false pretenses.
Alta Finks retired in 2007 after 41 years as the registrar. She was 96 when she died. Police say Boone is suspected of forging and cashing 12 checks totaling $1,750, according to Detective Andrew Terrill, who investigated.
Police say all the checks were signed in the name of the executor of the Finks estate and made payable to Boone. The executor is also Boone’s housemate.
Boone remained jailed Friday afternoon. He is due in General District Court on Oct. 14 at 9 a.m.
