Police say two Culpeper men face charges after a Monday evening stabbing and fight involving a chair.

Louis M. Fernandez, 51, of the 200 block of West Davis Street, is charged with felony malicious wounding and cutting, stabbing or wounding in the commission of a felony. Craig W. Caton, 47, of the 100 block of Jeffries Alley, faces a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery. Police say the incident began around 6 p.m.

Officer Jeff Dodson was responding to a 9-1-1 hang up call on West Davis Street when Caton, who was bleeding from the chest, flagged him down. Caton told Dodson that Fernandez had stabbed him on Jeffries Alley.

Upon further investigation, Fernandez told police that he and Caton got into an argument after a wheel chair-bound woman Caton had been pushing was nearly tipped over. Police said both men appeared intoxicated but they managed to upright the woman.

An argument then broke out over a comment Caton allegedly made to the woman and a missing liquor bottle.

Caton is accused of hitting Fernandez in the face with a chair, causing a wound under his left eye. Fernandez is suspected of stabbing Caton in the chest. Both men were taken to the hospital, where they were treated and released.

Both men are scheduled for arraignment in General District Court on Oct. 15 at 8:30 a.m. Caton was released on a $2,500 bond; Fernandez was held in jail on a $2,500 bond.
