The Culpeper County School Board will reconvene for its two-day retreat this weekend.

This will be the first time the board has met since it made its impromptu announcement that it was “mutually” parting ways with former Superintendent David Cox during its original two-day summer retreat in June.

Before tonight’s meeting, the board will receive construction updates at 6 p.m. from Construction Projects Manager Hunter Spencer on the progress of the county’s two new schools: Eastern View High and Yowell Elementary, set to open this fall.

Friday’s meeting — held at Central Office, 450 Radio Lane — is open to the public and scheduled to start at 6 p.m. before the closed session.

The retreat will follow an hour later.

The board plans to vote on Yowell’s opening date and where (if necessary) to house nearly 600 students and teachers until the $15 million building is complete.

The first day of school is Aug. 20.

Earlier this year, there was discussion of housing those students at a central location such as Culpeper Middle School and the nearby Culpeper County High School annex. There, many classrooms will be available because the county is opening the second high school.

For the last few years, CMS housed CCHS students in its ninth-grade wing downstairs.

During Friday’s retreat, the board plans to brainstorm on what’s in store for the 2008-09 school year.

Chairman George Dasher and Acting Superintendent Larry Carter will provide a vision update.

The board will also discuss goals and objectives for the 10-school district.

On Saturday, the board plans to welcome Cox back to make a presentation during the instructional program discussion. Cox and Jim Allen, interim director of curriculum and instruction, will discuss goals and directions.

Allen will also share the preliminary 2007-08 standards of learning test results. The board will also talk about the 2009-10 fiscal year operating budget. Carter and CCPS Finance Director Jeff Shomo will go over the business and finance goals and directions.
