The Floyd T. Binns Middle School choir is headed to the nation’s capital for a chance to witness history.

Even though the students won’t get to sing at the presidential inauguration on Jan. 20, they will get to observe the ceremony.

Choir Director Doray Walker applied through Heritage Festivals last year for the chance to participate in next year’s Inaugural Festival.

“I think this is an awesome chance of a lifetime for some of our students,” Walker said Thursday morning. “It’s quite an honor for our middle school to be there.”

The choir, however, will get to sing in an annual competition at the National City Christian Church in NW Washington, D.C. on Jan. 18.

The four-day trip begins Jan. 17 and will include visiting the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Museum of American History, the National Archives and Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.

On Jan. 19, the students will attend the Inaugural Ball at the Hyatt Regency Hotel where the award ceremony will be held.

During the trip’s finale, the 40 FTB students and six chaperones will head to the National Mall to witness the swearing in ceremony, which begins at noon on the steps of the Capitol building.

Overall, about 5,000 students nationwide will perform during that historical weekend.
