School Board begins retreat tonight

For the second time this year, the Culpeper County School Board will remain in the area for its semiannual two-day retreat.

Last year, the board agreed to hold the meetings locally in an effort to save the county money during the economic downturn.

In years past, the board has traveled to Ruckersville, Williamsburg and Graves Mountain Lodge in Madison County to discuss school-related issues.

Tonight’s public meeting at Central Office, 450 Radio Lane, is scheduled to start at 6, and Saturday’s meeting will begin at 8 a.m.

On tonight’s agenda, the board will review its division goals and set or revise new ones regarding academic, technology, safety and security and communication-related issues.

Board members will also discuss their goals to visit all 10 public schools at least once during the school year, accumulate a minimum of 12 Virginia School Board Association Academy points and assign members to School Board committees.

On the agenda for Saturday, the board plans on discussing discipline, the 2010-11 school calendar and capital improvement plan priorities. Goals for newly hired Superintendent Bobbi Johnson will also be discussed.

The board plans to evaluate Johnson in January, her six-month review.
