Incumbent wants to improve management of county growth
What are the top three issues facing Culpeper County and how would you address them?
Growth: I have always fought for improved management of county growth. The tool supervisors have to managing growth is zoning. I have remained consistent in my efforts to strengthen and improve these ordinances.
Water and Sewer: The county must establish reliable water and sewer to provide services for economic development. More business and industry is needed to increase our tax base to offset the increased demands created by the residential growth we have experienced. I am hopeful the town and county will create a regional authority.
The Economy: I recently fought to lower the proposed tax rate for 2010 to create a local economic stimulus and lessen the burden on our tax payers. We must continue the quest for clean hi-tech industry to create new jobs, as well as, maintain our existing businesses, including agriculture. This will help us increase our level of funding for services, especially in education and public safety.
What is the top issue facing your district?
Growth.
If you do not receive the Republican nomination, do you plan to run as an independent?
No. I have always run for election with the support of the Republican party. However, on the board I have never considered party ties to be relevant on any issue.
What are your values as a Republican?
I am a fiscal conservative and believe strongly in hard work, family values and ethics.
Is there someone in the community that you admire and why?
My late father has always been my “American Idol”. He was a great businessman and civic leader. He instilled honesty, integrity, accountability and respect for all in me.
A few years ago, your opponent made a name for himself by voicing strong opinions against former Sheriff H. Lee Hart regarding alleged trespassing and criminal behavior at the low water bridge near your property in Rixeyville. How does that factor into this campaign?
I am running for office to represent the best interest of all citizens of Culpeper County. I have received many calls over the years on this situation.
Our rivers are one of our most valuable natural resources and should be available to those who want to enjoy them in a responsible and respectful manner without feeling intimidated or harassed. However, the Board of Supervisors has no authority to govern this matter; our responsibility is to follow the codes to protect our natural resources, not control them.
Final thoughts
For 24 years, I have had the honor and privilege to represent the Jefferson District and serve Culpeper County, a responsibility I do not take lightly. I have been available and responsive to all county citizens. I have always strived to understand the Code of Virginia, maintain county ordinances and to stay within the law when making decisions that affect our county and its people. I hope my experience and knowledge will continue to be an asset to the Board of Supervisors. I would sincerely appreciate the support of all Jefferson District voters by casting their vote on May 20 at (Germanna Community College’s) Daniel Technology Center at 6:30 p.m.
