Walmart opens store at Zion Crossroads

A Walmart at Zion Crossroads in Louisa County opens to customers Wednesday at 8 a.m.

Located near the interchange of U.S. 15 and I-64, the new Walmart will employ about 250 people, according to store manager Tommy Gordon.

Full-time Walmart associates in Virginia earn, on average, $11.46 per hour, according to the company.

The Zion Crossroads Walmart will feature wider aisles, according to a company release, along with a full line of groceries, deli, bakery, pharmacy, lawn and garden center and a Tire Lube & Express.

The 156,490-square feet store will be open 24 hours a day seven days a week.

Community and business leaders will gather at the new Walmart for a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.

A color guard from Fork Union Military Academy, about 17 miles from the new store south down U.S. 15, will present the colors at the grand opening. Tommy Sant, an associate from the Walmart Distribution Center in Zion Crossroads, will sing the National Anthem.

As of Oct. 31, Walmart operated 8,222 stores worldwide, according to company data. It employs more than 1.4 million in the U.S. The company made $100.1 billion in sales in the second quarter of fiscal year 2009.

As of August, Walmart operated 110 stores in Virginia, including 71 Supercenters, 18 discount stores, one neighbor-hood market, 16 Sam’s Clubs and four distribution centers.

The company employs 38,820 Virginians, according to walmart.com
