Tea planned in town of Madison’s historic Kemper Residence

Crisp, cooler weather is a reminder that it’s almost time for the fall tea to benefit our Madison County Historical Society!

The tea is set for Wednesday, Sept. 30. A generous luncheon tea will be served at 12:30 p.m. in the Kemper Residence on North Main Street, home of former Virginia governor and Battle of Gettysburg Confederate war hero James Lawson Kemper.

The menu features some anticipated favorites, such as highland scones served with Belle Kemper’s lemon curd (Belle Kemper was James Kemper’s wife). Following tradition, there will also be new food items, including tasty curried chicken rolls, beef on homemade pumpernickel tea sandwiches and apple squares.

Ample servings of sweets and savories accompany the unlimited offering of aromatic tea. All food is prepared by volunteers and donated, so your contribution of $18 per person supports the historical society’s work to preserve and stimulate interest in our county’s history.

This event could not take place out the dedicated volunteers. Some of our volunteer hosts and hostesses include:

• Anne Hughes, a resident of Etlan, a long-time member of the historical society and a “charter” member of the Madison County Historical Society Tea Group.

• Bob and Pam Krause, who live in Rochelle, and who have been a part of the group for four years.

• Wolftown resident Maryvonne Longley was a part of the team that furnished the restored Kemper Residence, and has helped with the teas for two years.

• Genevieve McLearen of Courthouse Mountain and Betty Lynn Yowell of Pratts are former officers of the historical society and original contributors to the benefit teas.

• Kay Reiss of Oak Park is a longtime member of the society and of the tea group.

• Heidi Sage of Rochelle has been helping with the teas since their beginning in 2002.

• Jill Schreiner is a current member of the board and edits the society newsletter. She is an original member of the tea volunteers.

• Bob and Mary Haught live in Novum and have also prepared food for the teas for seven years.

These providers of food represent all corners of Madison County and our guests traditionally come from all parts of the county as well as from surrounding areas.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of our guests, recent teas have reached capacity quickly, and we have had waiting lists. Don’t be disappointed – make your reservation right away. Call (540) 547-4398 and leave a message with your name, telephone number and how many are in your party. You will receive a telephone call to confirm your reservation.

We look forward to welcoming you on Sept. 30!
